each food has a distinct combination of tastes and energies—and a corresponding effect on both the digestive system and on the body as a whole.
Combining foods with radically different energies can overwhelm the digestive fire ( agni ) and can cause
- indigestion
- fermentation
- gas
- bloating
- and the creation of toxins
This is why combining proper food is so important.
General rules to follow in Ayurveda
- A meal should consist of 1 fist of liquid (soup, stew), 1 fist of solid food and 1 fist of “space” in the stomach so that the meal can be processed well.
- All 6 flavors must be covered in one meal to satisfy hunger.
- You should not drink anything half an hour before eating, you should not drink anything during eating, and you should not drink anything for half an hour after eating.
- It is ideal if you eat your breakfast, lunch and dinner at approximately the same time → establish fixed routines and regularity in your everyday life
Food Combining
- Do not mix stale food with freshly cooked food (stale food is harder to digest than freshly cooked food. Two totally different energies)
- If you eat leftover ideally only from the same meal. Preferably not more than 24 hours old.
- Always eat fruit separately as a meal itself.
- Only eat one protein per meal (cheese, meat, eggs, tofu, beans – choose one)
- Do not eat raw food with cooked food (eat the easier-to-digest cooked food first, then the raw food. So first the warm meal, then the salad).
- Do not eat very sour foods with very sweet foods (sour foods require different enzymes than sweet foods).
- Honey must not be heated, used in hot tea or for baking.
- Ice cream with hot fruits is unfavorable, on the one hand because of raw fruits and milk, on the other hand because of the hot and cold combination.
